If the EPUB has no fixed print pagination, the tool starts with an estimated page count and lets you replace it with the page total shown by your own reader.

Progress in context

How the progress estimate works

The Reading Companion provides factual estimates for each book's reading time and structural details. These are based on the word count and the number of text sections. Use them to plan your reading schedule honestly.

The catalog's median word count is 59,150 words, with a median reading time of 258 minutes. Longer books may take over 500 minutes, while shorter ones can be read in under an hour. The tool helps you see where a specific book falls.

Reading Time

Each book shows an estimated reading time in minutes. For example, 'A Simpleton' at 135,117 words would take about 588 minutes.

Text Sections

The number of sections indicates how the book is divided. More sections may offer natural stopping points.

Word Count

Total word count is the basis for time estimates. Use it to compare the scale of different works.

Staying on Track

Reading Tracker

Once you have chosen a book, the next challenge is actually reading it. The Reading Tracker helps you plan your progress by recording pages, setting a daily page goal, and estimating when you will finish. It is a simple tool, but it can make a big difference in maintaining a consistent reading habit.

The tracker stores your progress in your browser using localStorage, so you do not need an account. You can update your current page as you read, and the tracker will show you how many pages remain and how many days it will take at your current pace. The default daily goal is 20 pages, but you can change it to fit your schedule.

Setting a Daily Page Goal

The daily page goal is the number of pages you aim to read each day. The default is 20 pages, but you can set it higher or lower depending on your available time. For example, if you are reading A Rebellious Heroine — Reading Companion, which has an estimated total of 131 pages (based on 32,559 words divided by 250 words per page), a goal of 20 pages per day would allow you to finish in about 7 days. If you set a goal of 10 pages per day, it would take about 14 days.

The tracker calculates the estimated finish days by dividing the remaining pages by your daily goal and rounding up. This gives you a clear target. You can adjust your goal at any time, and the estimate will update accordingly.

Understanding the Page Estimate

The tracker uses an initial page estimate based on a standard of 250 words per page. This estimate is derived from the book’s word count, which is supplied in the catalog. For A Rebellious Heroine — Reading Companion, the word count is 32,559, so the estimated total pages are 131. This number is not fixed; you can replace it with the total page count from your own reading app or edition if it differs.

The estimated remaining time is proportional to the remaining pages. If you have read half of the book, the tracker will show that you have about half of the estimated reading time left. This is a rough guide, but it can help you plan your reading sessions.

Keep in mind that the tracker records progress in pages, not in sections or minutes. If you read for 30 minutes but only cover 15 pages, the tracker will show 15 pages of progress. This keeps the tracking simple and consistent, regardless of how fast you read.

Using the Tracker with Your Own Edition

The tracker is designed to work with any edition of a book. If you are reading a physical copy, you can enter the page numbers as they appear in your book. If you are reading an ebook, you can use the page numbers from your reading app. The tracker does not care about the format; it just needs a page count.

To update the total page count, you can change the "Total Pages" field to match your edition. This is useful if your edition has different pagination than the standard estimate. Once you update the total, the remaining time and finish days will be recalculated based on your progress.

The tracker is a practical tool for anyone who wants to read more consistently. By setting a daily goal and tracking your progress, you can turn a large book into a series of manageable steps. For readers who are reading a short story or a long novel, the tracker helps you stay on course.
